Insomnia, Don’t Let It Keep You Down

Do you suffer from sleepless nights?  Do you have difficulty falling asleep or problems staying asleep?  If so, then you may be suffering from the sleep disorder known as insomnia.

Everyone wants better sleep.  There is a multitude of over-the-counter and herbal remedies out there to help you sleep.  However, not all of them are good for your body.  In fact, some of them can train your body to not produce the necessary sleep hormones it needs to function correctly.  Thus, finding the right treatment can be tricky.

There are different types of insomnia.  This can make it even more confusing to choose a suitable treatment plan of action.  There is the more transient insomnia which is often due to life changes, and there is chronic insomnia which lasts much longer and is usually a result of larger changes in life or physical health issues.

Symptoms of insomnia include:

  • Sleeplessness and fatigue during the day
  • Trouble sleeping for any real length of time
  • Difficulty falling asleep at night more than one or two nights a week, every week
  • Problems concentrating
  • Waking multiple times throughout the night
  • Mental and behavioral disorders (which is a more serious symptom).

Insomnia can be the result of several different causes.  Jet lag and changes in your schedule can cause transient insomnia, which is relatively short term.  Intermittent insomnia can happen infrequently and is bothersome yet controllable.  Chronic insomnia is the type which occurs for over a month or longer and happens on a nightly basis.  Stress, depression and anxiety can lead to insomnia.  Ailments which cause difficulty in breathing or cause pain can also be a reason of insomnia.

Almost everyone suffers from some form of insomnia at one time or another.  So what can you do about insomnia?  The safest plan of action includes herbal or natural remedies for insomnia.  Melatonin or lavender is most often used.  Sure, you can see your doctor for a prescribed sleep remedy but sleep prescriptions can often be addictive and have unwanted side effects.  It’s always best to choose the treatment plan that can provide effective relief, with no side effects and has all-natural ingredients.
